Can you tell if someone truly understands you... or just follows rules?
You're about to communicate with an alien life form. It doesn't speak your language, but it has learned to respond using a translation system.
Have a conversation and see if you can tell: does it truly understand you?
Did you notice anything strange about the alien's responses? Let's investigate what's really happening.
The alien wasn't understanding you at all. It was just following rules.
This is philosopher John Searle's thought experiment. Imagine someone in a room with a rulebook for Chinese characters. They receive Chinese text, follow rules to produce Chinese responses, and send them out. From outside, it looks like they understand Chinese. But do they really?
The alien did the same thing: it matched symbols to other symbols using rules. It gave appropriate responses without any understanding of what they meant.
Question: If AI systems follow rules (very complex ones), are they truly understanding language? Or are they just very sophisticated pattern matchers?
